What is Homeopathy
In the late 1700's Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, discovered that when a person becomes ill it affects not only the physical (body) state, but the mental (mind) and emotional (spirit) state as well, and founded Homoeopathy (from the Greek words homoeo = 'similar' and pathos = 'suffering'). It is built on the philosophy "Let likes cure likes" (Similia Similibus Curentur).
Homoeopathy places emphasis on the individual's own unique experience of their symptoms. There is not simply one remedy for a particular illness, but rather one remedy, out of a whole range, which is carefully selected on the basis of each patient's own variation of that illness. Patients are often asked questions relating to lifestyle, temperament, likes and dislikes, family as well as their personal medical history and current symptoms during a consultation. Homoeopathy uses all of this information to find the correct remedy.

When the correct remedy has been selected, the patient not only experiences the disappearance of symptoms, but an improvement in their general wellbeing - physically and emotionally.
Homoeopathic remedies can be prescribed for acute illnesses such as teething, flu, headache, colic, earache, gastric upsets and so on. You can expect the treatment to work very quickly.
Constitutional balancing is often used for recurrent and stubborn cases, or chronic illnesses, as it acts in a deeper and more sustained way.
Chronic long-term illnesses such as insomnia, constipation, menstrual disorders, acne, eczema, sinusitis, etc use constitutional remedes. A remedy is carefully prescribed which covers not only the physical symptoms but the emotional state as well.
Homoeopathic remedies are provided in either pills or drops and the dose varies depending upon the patient's individual needs. These remedies have been prepared in a specific way by a process called "potentisation". This is an activating process involving dilution and succussion (shaking) which makes the remedies non-toxic and free from side effects.
How does Homoeopathy work?
Homoeopathy is a system that looks not only at your physical symptoms but at your mental and emotional symptoms as well. It brings together all aspects of your state of health, matching an individualised remedy to you.
Finding the "similimum" (or correct remedy) is based on the principle of "Let likes cure likes" (Similia Similibus Curentur). For example cutting onions will produce streaming eyes and nose (usually lots of hot, clear fluid), and red eyes and nose. This is the "picture" of the remedy alium cepa. If we gave this remedy to a healthy person, h/she would display the symptoms of cutting the onions. If you visit your homoeopath with these symptoms, you would be given alium cepa as the correct remedy to take - like cures like.
Another principle homoeopathy is based on is the "minimal dose". This means we only want you to take the fewest number of doses to get you well. As soon as an improvement is seen, the number of doses you take is reduced. Homoeopathic medicine is non-addictive and safe for babies through to elderly and people suffering from chronic illnesses.
